Cheri
Falkenstien-Doyle
Lecture: Monday, September 26
Cheri Falkenstein-Doyle will lecture on Charles Loloma, arguably the most
influential Native American jeweler of the twentieth century, who drew
inspiration from a variety of sources, including the world of high fashion
and the wearable art movement, as well as traditional Hopi culture. These
influences, together with his conviction that native arts should evolve
to reflect contemporary realities and personal experience, led to the
development of his unique style.
Falkenstein-Doyle’s lecture is in conjunction with the exhibit,
Loloma, at the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. Featuring
nearly 500 examples of pottery and jewelry, the Wheelwright’s exhibition
covers the breadth of Loloma’s artistic production from the 1940s
to the closing of his studio in 1988. The exhibition, curated by Martha
Hopkins Struever, is on view in the Klah and Slater Galleries through
October 30, 2005. (740 Camino Lejo, Museum Hill, Santa Fe, NM 87505, www.wheelwright.org)
