Application Checklist

Please Note: SFAI must receive all of these materials on or before the postmark deadline.

  1. Complete and submit the electronic application or use the downloadable application and send through the mail.
  2. A check or money order for the $25 (USD) processing fee made out to SFAI. We prefer not to accept credit cards, but will if necessary.
  3. Artistic Statement: A brief (1 or 2 paragraphs) description of your work.
  4. Statement of Intent: A brief (1 to 2 paragraphs) statement that outlines your goals and what you hope to achieve during your residency
  5. A current resume & 100 word narrative bio written in the third person.
  6. Two letters of recommendation using the Residency Reference Form provided. Recommendations should come from two sources that are familiar with your work; former professors, colleagues, curators, museum directors, editors, publishers, etc.
  7. Work sample (see below).
  8. All Application Materials will be recycled. Do not send originals.

Visual Artist Support Materials Guidelines

  • 10 digital images on a CD or DVD with a corresponding image list including title, medium, dimensions, date, and any other information pertinent to viewing the piece. Images should be 72dpi and approximately 8"x10" or approximately 800x600 pixels.
  • Video Artists should submit a 5 minute segment on DVD. (NTSC)
  • List of images that corresponds to visual materials submitted.

Writer Support Materials

Writing Samples:

  • Fiction: 10 pages
  • Non-Fiction: 10 pages
  • Poetry: 10 poems (15 page maximum)
  • Drama: 10 pages of dialogue and 1 page synopsis of play
  • Screenwriting: 10 pages of dialogue and 1 page synopsis of script

All work should be typed, 12-point font size, and double-spaced. Please provide a cover sheet with your name, email address and title(s) of the work(s).

Witter Bynner Poetry Translator applicants should submit no more than 10 published or unpublished poems. Please include original language text and English translations of each poem.

Applying as an Emergency Relief Resident (ERR)

  • Complete online application or download application and mail
  • Letters of reference are not needed. Include names and contact information of two professional references only.
  • Work Sample (please refer to work sample guidelines for visual artists and writers)
  • Detailed letter describing emergency need
  • $25 application fee for ERR applicants is waived

The monthly residency fees are waived for accepted ERR applicants, however ERR residents are responsible for their own travel and transportation costs.

Eligibility

  • Artists and writers over 25 years of age are eligible. Residencies are intended as creative opportunities for visual artists and writers in all genres and mediums. Artistic merit and promise are the basis for selections. Mature and emerging artists are encouraged to apply.
  • A rotating panel of arts professionals review applications and supporting materials. Final awards of residencies are at the discretion of SFAI.
  • Collaborators may be accepted for a residency; however, both need to submit separate applications along with a joint proposal.
  • Couples who are artists or writers may apply individually with the understanding that one partner may be accepted and the other may not. SFAI is unable to invite spouses or partners to accompany artists in residence under any other circumstances.
  • After two calendar years have lapsed, previous residents may re-apply for another residency by submitting a new application with new work.
  • Pets are not allowed at SFAI.

Residency periods are determined after selection. Residencies are scheduled for up to one year after the granting of the residency.
